‘Experts’ and the public do share some opinions, but it seems to me that there are some gaping holes.
Look at this survey conducted by the New York Times.
The term was last updated in 1994, so frankly, an update is long overdue. At the same time, defining “healthy” has never been more complicated.
Countless new exotic foods have arrived on our tables over the past two decades and, (thanks to the Internet and social media), we’re now bombarded with more conflicting messages than ever about what’s ‘healthy’ and what’s not.
The New York Times chose a good time to conduct an interesting survey comparing the opinions of American citizens and hundreds of professional nutritionists on approximately 50 common foods. And of course, opinions vary greatly.
Foods that nutritionists consider much healthier than the general population does.
These include (of course!) tofu (89% of nutritionists vs. 58% of Americans), quinoa (89% vs. 58%), and hummus (90% vs. 66%).
Why such differing opinions? The NYT suggests it may be because these foods are relatively new to the mainstream American diet. Perhaps people have yet to accept them in their minds.
Foods that the American population thinks are much healthier than the experts do.
The widest gap occurred with granola bars, with 71% of the public saying they’re healthy, but only 28% of nutritionists agreeing. Similar differences exist with granola (47% of nutritionists vs. 80% of public), coconut oil (37% vs. 72%), and frozen yogurt (47% vs. 80%). Many of these foods contain added sugars, of which nutritionists may be aware, while the general population is not.
The Times reports that this will hopefully change soon:
“In May, the Food and Drug Administration announced a new template for nutrition labels, and one priority was to clearly distinguish between sugars that naturally occur in food and sugars that are added later to heighten flavors.”
Other foods about which both experts and the public disagree.
These include popcorn and a number of high-fat foods, such as steak, pork chops, whole milk, and Cheddar cheese. The split in opinions hovers between 50-60% for each group, which isn’t surprising.
“Years ago, the nutritional consensus was that fat, and particularly the saturated fat found in dairy and red meat, was bad for your heart. Newer studies are less clear, and many of the fights among nutritionists tend to be about the right amount of protein and fat in a healthy diet. The uncertainty about these foods, as expressed both by experts and ordinary Americans, reflects the haziness of the nutritional evidence about them.”
Until time and further studies reveal more information, it may be helpful to know what the nutritionists said when asked how they eat on a daily basis. When given a list of dietary descriptions, such as Atkins, Paleolithic, Organic, Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, and Mediterranean, the majority (57%) said they follow “no special rules or restrictions.”
Rather than singling out and labeling certain foods as “good” or “bad,” it’s probably best to focus on eating healthily overall (and not feeling guilty for the occasional less-than-healthy treat).
Ian: What is ‘healthy’ food to you? And.. when will someone decide on what is ‘healthy’ water?
If the following list = YOU, your metabolism might be trying to tell you something!
- History of alcohol/drug use or hepatitis
- Long term prescription drug use
- Sensitive to chemicals (tobacco smoke, fumes, perfume, cleaning agents, etc.)
- Pain between the shoulder blades
- Stomach upset by greasy foods
- Greasy or shiny stools
- History of nausea, motion sickness, or morning sickness
- Light or pale colored stools
- Headache over the eyes
- Gallbladder attacks
- Bitter taste in the mouth (especially after meals)
- Become sick or easily intoxicated if drinking wine
- Easily hung over
- Pain under right side of rib cage
- Hemorrhoids or varicose veins
- NutraSweet (aspartame) consumption
- Chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
So if this is you– read on, learn how your detoxification system works, and how to support it!
Our body has the ability to naturally “spring clean” every day if your diet has adequately supplies for the process. There’s no special juice cleanse needed! A liver detox sans expensive powders and supplements is safer, more effective, and gentler than a detox diet of pills’n’powders. Eating whole foods instead of supplements and powders gives your body something it knows as normal and natural. It contains a broad spectrum of nutrients to DRIVE your detox!
LIVER DETOX: IT’S LIKE DOING YOUR LAUNDRY
- FILTRATION. A good baseline of nutrients help our liver to filter our blood and to be able to carry out its natural function of identifying both good things (food and nutrients) and bad things (toxins and harmful substances). Think of it as finding stains in your laundry.
- PHASE ONE DETOX. Next, our body uses food-based enzymes and nutrients to transform toxins, used hormones, RX drugs, food additives, etc. The pupose of this phase is to commence neutralizing a toxin and to turn it into a water soluble compound capable of leaving the body. At this half way point, toxin reactivity actually increases. This can cause problems if it doesn’t continue to Phase 2 right away. Think of Phase 1 detoxification as a ‘pre-wash cycle’.
- PHASE TWO DETOX. Phase 2 acts upon phase 1. It’s the final transformation stage of the toxin, making it water-soluble for removal from the body. Amino acids (building blocks of protein) drive this stage, as they attach to the toxins to further neutralize and escort them out of the body. (Note that the widest range of amino acids comes from grassfed meat!) Think of Phase 2 as our ‘main wash cycle’. It does the hard work of removing dirt and debris before leaving your clothes clean.
- ELIMINATION. Lastly, the toxins are eliminated via the digestive track in bile, or via the kidneys in urine. It’s very like the drain and spin cycle.
LIVER DETOX POWDERS AND SUPPLEMENTS
My problem with liver detox supplements and protein powders is the lack of any guarantee of quality. They may contain irritating additives and fillers, and most of the raw materials are imported without scant regulation of safety and purity. These foods are also often “refined” so much of the nutritional value is stripped out during processing. These Empty foods scan compromise your detoxification abilities, causing you to retain toxins rather than excrete them. When you invest in whole foods, your body is energized with nutrients ‘made’ for supporting liver detox. You are – ultimately – the sum of your habits so… what you choose for eat matters. It’s definitely NOT what you do or don’t consume for 16-48 hours. I like the bigger picture: fueling and meeting your body’s needs on a daily basis! Your daily diet should automatically support the liver detox process– not a ritual you do 1-2 times a year. When we read articles on the net they seem to be very focused on eating “less” and “dieting” (cleanses/detox diets can reinforce that) andit seems people actually end up needing far MORE food than they think (and that nutritional deficiencies actually down-regulate the appetite further). In the end, we all want our body to just WORK better, and naturally detox more efficiently as a normal part of metabolism. Liquid fasts and cleanses Proteins DRIVE the detoxification process, so.. cleanses based on juices, fruits or vegetables really don’t make a lot of sense. Don’t leave! I know many of you love the juice fast idea.. it’s only my opinion! Any time you fast or cleanse (with the exception of when you have the flu!) you are forcing a regimen on your body. This often means ignoring your own body needs, cravings, and intuition. Dr Ray Peat said: “Any craving is a good starting point, because we have several biological mechanisms for correcting specific nutritional deficiencies.” If someone is in a hypo-metabolic state (slowed metabolism), the body naturally holds on to more water in tissues, craves less water, and craves more salt and solid food. A liquid cleanse would do much more harm than good. Whether you decide on a cleanse or not, don’tforget that your body always talks to you about what it needs. Learning to listen is an amazing tool for building your body connection so that you can feed and support your body’s natural detoxification system.
LIVER DETOX FOODS YOU MAY NOT BE GETTING
FRUIT: The vitamins and minerals in fruits drive phase 1 of detoxification! Costly detox diets and cleansing routines are a waste of money compared to organic fruits and fruit juices to fuel this first phase of detoxification so much more efficiently! Yes, I know – we’ve often talked about the hazards of excess fructose but in this case the need is specifically to begin the detox phase one. Choose ripe seasonal fruits high in vitamin C for maximum antioxidant effect. Some great choices are organic oranges, pure orange juice , kiwis, berries, papaya, and pineapple. BEETS: Beets are serious liver detox food. They help thin your bile, helping us to detox more efficiently. A common liver problem manifests as sluggish/stagnant bile flow. Toxins neutralized in the liver are dumped into the bile (our bile duct is a toxins ‘drainpipe’) When the bile gets too thick, toxins can’t flow out of our body quick enough (leading to fatigue, low energy, constipation, PMS, toxicity and disease)! Regular beet consumption (and a nutritionally wealthy diet) can help strengthen this process naturally! Buy beets and shred them in your food processor. Try a little beet slaw (with lemon or apple cider vinegar, salt and olive oil) daily or as often as you like to help fuel your natural detoxification system! NON- INFLAMMATORY PROTEINS: Vegetarians, you may not like this section, but here we go. Our body needs a certain balance of amino acids to support our bodily functions, particularly liver detox. The balance we need is achieved when we eat “the whole animal” and ALL of its parts. When you eat just muscle meats regularly, including chicken, pork, beef, lamb, you tend to create an amino acid balance in the body that favors inflammation, and hey. it actually starves your liver! It is really important to balance the amino acid spectrum we consume. Non-inflammatory proteins such as eggs, fish, gelatin, dairy products (milk, cheese), shellfish, and organ meats are excellent choices to increase in our diet to better support your detoxification capabilities. Try having muscle meats every other day if your intake of non-inflammatory proteins is low. One of my favorite ways to make this easy is to have some bone broth every day.
LIVER IS THE MASTER!
Healthy detoxification supports liver health. It’s absolutely essential for good digestion, a healthy metabolism, and proper thyroid function. The following is a transcript from a video by Dr George McDermott, Phlebotomist (Blood specialist)
“Hello ladies and gentlemen. My name is Dr. George McDermott. I’m a state certified phlebotomist, which means I’m a blood doctor. As my kids jokingly call me, they call me sometimes Count Dracula.
What we’re going to be talking about today is just as serious as being under the fangs of Count Dracula, and that nemesis, that epidemic that is overtaking America is called acidosis. Acidosis is too much blood acid in your blood system. It’s measured by pH. PH is a scale which only measures water, H2O. It’s a scale that goes and starts off from 0 and it ends at 14. Right here at 7 is pure rain water. From 0 to 7 is acid. From 7 to 14 is alkaline. The human body was designed by God to be pH 7.365. Very easy to remember, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you need to be alkaline. For your sake and for your family’s sake and for your grandchildren’s sake, they all must be alkaline to enjoy the fruits of their life. Americans, the majority of Americans are here at 6.8, and they are suffering from a condition called acidosis. Acidosis is a medical term that it very simply means they have too much blood acid. This is caused by five different reasons. Number one is the diet that we’re eating. Americans eat too much fast foods, we have too many hamburgers, french fries, and of course, Coca-Cola is absolutely the worst thing you can drink. The second reason why people have acidosis is because of stress. Stress is killing Americans. The third reason is because of too many parasites. The fourth reason is because of drugs. I’m talking about over the counter medications. I’m talking about aspirin, acetahetamine which is also called Tylenol. ll these medications have too much acid and too many Americans are doing these.
All four of these things we can control, but the one thing that we cannot control and the thing that is very important is the age. Because the older we get, the more acidic we’re going to become. This is going to destroy the quality of your life.
The human body goes through three states of life, from the time you’re to the time you’re 25, you are in what’s called an anabolic stage. This anabolic stage is a Greek word which simply means that you’re growing. When you are born, you are 7.7 on the pH scale. You start off at 7.7. From 25 to 45 you are in what’s called homeostasis. At this period you are 7.0. This is a balancing act. That’s what homeostasis means. Starting off at 45, very slowly that you become more and more acidic. This situation medically is called catabolic. Catabolic is the opposite of anabolic. Catabolic is a Greek word which basically means you’re falling apart. Now, the problem is is when you get to 6.4 on this pH scale which is out here, you die. This is a lifeline right here. You start off at 7.7, the middle of your life you’re about 7. As you start to become older and older, you become more and more acidic. When you reach 6.4 you shriveled up and basically you die. It’s very, very critically important that you understand this acidosis, because what’s happening is as your body is moving this way, by drinking alkaline water you will be able to replenish the vital nutrients into your body and you will be able to remain more and more alkaline. Therefore, adjust your life so you will be able to live this way. This is not only important for yourself, it’s important for your children and important for your grandchildren. Everybody needs to participate in this.
The easiest method of doing this is simply just drinking a glass of water, 8 glasses of water a day. By doing that, you are naturally restoring the alkalinity into your bloodstream and you’re keeping away from the ravages of chronic disease.
Chronic diseases are the diseases which are built up by too much acid waste in your body. These diseases very simply are cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and the list goes on and on and on. This is the major diseases which kill Americans is all based on acidosis, too much acid in the bloodstream. If you want to preserve your family, if you want to give your family the quality of life that they deserve, not only for yourself, but also for your children and your grandchildren, you must remain alkaline. It gives you the vitality. Young children have to be alkaline in order to grow. In order to have a mentally alert mind, you have to be alkaline. That’s the reason why it’s so critically important for you to alkalize your body all the time by drinking alkaline water.”
Hey, I know we sell the world’s best water filter.
And a big reason we deliver so many is its good fluoride performance. It is the ONLY water filter we have seen that has actually been tested for fluoride reduction over its expected lifespan. We used Griffith University’s NATA accredited laboratory, at great expense) because we wanted an independent point of reference for our customers who, we know DO care abot what goes into their bodies. The lab tests show around 80% net reduction. We have nothing to compare this to because we have never seen any other comparable tests. We HAVE seen some products blithely claimed UP TO 98%. Sadly, consumer groups have never have the time or resources to ‘out’ people who make claims like this. So this news is going to be big news.. and a real validation of what we’ve been talking about for 16 years. I was just sent some REALLY interesting scientific studies that say that alkaline urine will remove much more fluoride from the body than acid urine. Wow. Now.. if it’s not a ‘Wow’ for you, let me explain. The team here have been following our own version of the alkaline diet for well over a decade. i attribute my thriving good (69 next month) health to our diet which ALWAYS has good amounts of dark leafy greens – the alkaline ‘manna from Heaven! We’ve also been drinking alkaline water for all of that time from our own water alkalizers. So yes, my pee is alkaline! Or at least it was last time I checked. The studies are clear. If your pee is alkaline, the fluoride that has got into you through either water, fluoride soaked foods, toothpaste… can be removed by an alkaline diet which in turn changes the pH of your pee. if you aren’t on an alkaline diet and don’t know much about it, I’m making you a special offer in this blog. Our highly successful online New Alkaline Diet and Defence Program is normally a paid product. Today you can sign on for free. If you don’t understand alkaline water, you’re going to find a load of relevancy here on our website. We are THE alkaline water experts, the inventors of the best natural water filter, alkalizer and hydrogen activator in the world. Sources: Relationship between urine pH and fluoride levels here The merck manual explanation of the elimination of drugs by the kidneys here (you can get on pubmed and find reams of the studies on individual drugs). Heres an example of the effect of urinary PH on amphetamine excretion. In this case making the urine very acidic can treat an overdose (notice that the excretion rates have a similar difference with fluoride. Here is one on adrenaline, although I suspect changes in the blood maybe even more interesting. It’s a small study..even so the effects are so pronounced that it reaches statistical significance.
INFLAMMATION: IT’S A “HOT” TOPIC.
It seems connected to avirtually every known chronic disease — from diabetes to obesity, heart disease to cancer, autism to dementia… even depression. Inflammatory diseases such as allergies, asthma, arthritis, and autoimmune disease are also increasing at dramatic rates. Doctors are trained to shut off inflammation with aspirin, anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil or Motrin, steroids, and increasingly powerful immune suppressing medication with the usual associated side effects. Doctors are really not trained to find and treat the underlying causes of inflammation in chronic disease. Hidden allergens, infections, environmental toxins, an inflammatory diet, and stress are the real causes of these inflammatory conditions, but that’s a big ‘ask’ for a 15 minute standard consultation. Let’s look at one ‘niche’ of inflammation. Autoimmune diseases now affect 24 million people. They include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. And yet.. these are often addressed using powerful immune suppressing medication and not by addressing the cause. A bit like taking a lot of aspirin while you are standing on a tack. The treatment isn’t more aspirin or a strong immune suppressant. It’s removing the tack. Inflammation Causes Disease To cool off inflammation in the body, first we must find the source. Functional medicine, the emerging 21st century paradigm of systems medicine, teaches us to treat the cause, not only the symptoms, to ask the question WHY are you sick, not only WHAT disease do you have. Autoimmunity: What it is and How it Occurs We are facing an epidemic of allergic (60 million people), asthmatic (30 million people), and autoimmune disorders (24 million people). As we already said, autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, celiac disease, thyroid disease, and the many other hard-to-classify syndromes in the 21st century. These are all autoimmune conditions, and at their root they are connected by one central biochemical process: A runaway immune response also known as systemic inflammation that results in your body attacking its own tissues. Your immune system is your defense against invaders. It’s your internal army and has to clearly distinguish friend from foe — to know you from others. Autoimmunity occurs when your immune system gets confused and your own tissues get caught in friendly cross-fire. Your body is fighting something — an infection, a toxin, an allergen, a food or the stress response — and somehow it redirects its hostile attack on your joints, your brain, your thyroid, your gut, your skin, or sometimes your whole body. This immune confusion results from what is referred to as molecular mimicry. Conventional approaches don’t have a method for finding the insult causing the problem. Functional medicine provides a map to find out which molecule the cells are mimicking. Where Do Autoimmune Disorders Happen? Interestingly, autoimmune disorders occur almost exclusively in developed countries. People in poor nations without modern amenities like running water, flush toilets, washing machines, and sterile backyards just don’t get these diseases. If you were a farm kid with lots of animals, you are also less likely to have any of these inflammatory disorders. Playing in the dirt, getting dirty, and being exposed to bugs and infections trains your immune system to recognize what is foreign and what is “you.” In this country, autoimmune diseases, when taken all together, are a huge health burden. They are the eighth leading cause of death among women, shortening the average patient’s lifespan by eight years. The annual health care cost for autoimmune diseases is $120 billion a year representing nearly twice the economic health care burden of cancer (about $ 70 billion a year). (i) Unfortunately, many of the conventional treatments available can make you feel worse. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil, steroids, immune suppressants like methotrexate, and the new TNF-alpha blockers like Enbrel or Remicade can lead to intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, depression, psychosis, osteoporosis, muscle loss, and diabetes, not to mention overwhelming infection and cancer. When used selectively these drugs can help people get their lives back. But they are really not a long-term solution. They shouldn’t be the end of treatment, just a bridge to cool off inflammation while we treat the root cause of the disease. 9 Steps to Overcoming Autoimmune Disease
- Check for hidden infections — yeast, viruses, bacteria, Lyme, etc. — with the help of a doctor, and treat them.
- Check for hidden food allergens with IgG food testing or just try The UltraSimple Diet, which is designed to eliminate most food allergens.
- Get tested for celiac disease, which is a blood test that any doctor can do.
- Get checked for heavy metal toxicity. Mercury and other metals can cause autoimmunity.
- Fix your gut. For details, see my blog on irritable bowel syndrome.
- Use nutrients such as fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, and probiotics to help calm your immune response naturally.
- Exercise steadily regularly — it’s a natural anti-inflammatory.
- Practice deep relaxation like yoga, deep breathing, biofeedback, or massage. Stress worsens the immune response.
- Look at your inflammation habits in your food and water. Alkalize and get a regular supply of infused hydrogen water.
The answers may be right in front of you. Treat the underlying causes of your illness and you will begin to experience vibrant health once more. References (i) Nakazawa, D. (2008). We talk a lot about the antioxidant capability of molecular hydrogen on this page.
Not only is it unique in selectively targeting the ‘baddie’ free radicals and leaving the ‘goodies’ alone, it also supports our natural antioxidant, glutathione. However.. I remind myself and anyone else interested in living longer that glutathione, our internal super-antioxidant needs one special mineral to be produced by our body. This mineral is selenium. and here’s where you get it. That’s why I use molecular hydrogen every day. It powers up my glutathione ability, but I also make sure I’m eating selenium-rich foods. Ian: SO True! My extra best meals are at home.
In most areas of life, the old saying “You get what you pay for” holds true. But when it comes to healthy dining options, the more expensive option may not be the best.
Ruopeng An, a kinesiology and community health professor at the University of Illinois looked at eight years of data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics in its National Health and Nutrition Survey, covering 18,098 US adults from 2003-2010. H discovered that people who dine out at full-service restaurants are no healthier than people who opt for fast food. Instead, eating at home is the healthiest option by a significant margin. An’s findings were published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. For instance, according to a report on the university’s news website, people who ate at full-service restaurants consumed about 58 more milligrams of cholesterol each day compared to people who ate at home. Those who ate fast food ate only 10 milligrams more than at-home diners, on average. An found a similar result when he looked at sodium intake. Eating at a fast food restaurant added about 300 milligrams of sodium to a diner’s daily intake. But eating at a full-service restaurant added 412 milligrams. Meanwhile, at-home diners consumed about 10 fewer grams of fat each day compared to both fast-food and restaurant diners. When it comes to saturated fat restaurants proved slightly better. Fast-food diners consumed 3.49 more grams per day versus at-home diners, while restaurant diners consumed 2.46 additional grams each day. “These findings reveal that eating at a full-service restaurant is not necessarily healthier than eating at a fast-food outlet,” he said, according to the university. “In fact, you may be at higher risk of overeating in a full-service restaurant when eating fast food. My advice to those hoping to consume a healthy diet is that it is healthier to prepare your own foods, and avoid eating outside the home whenever possible.” An said public health campaigns ought to be focused on limiting eating out in general, rather than on simply avoiding fast food.

Whilst I don’t agree with everything she says (she likes distilled water!) I do like much of the things Dr Virginia Golschmidt of Saveourbones has some great things, like this great – and simple – alkalizing recipe.
1. Hearty Stew
2 Servings Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- ½ medium red onion, diced
- ½ cup quinoa
- ½ cup carrots, shredded
- ½ cup green beans
- 1½ cups vegetable broth
- 5 tomatoes, cut up in small pieces
- 1 cup lima beans, cooked
- ½ teaspoon sea salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon parsley flakes
- In a large saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onion until soft.
- Add the quinoa, carrots, 1 cup broth, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and parsley. Bring to a boil, then simmer until quinoa is tender, 12 to 15 minutes.
- Stir in beans and cook for about 5 more minutes. You can add more vegetable broth to reach desired consistency.
She points to a 2015 study of alkaline potassium salts’ effect on bone resorption. (Worth a read!)The study, published in the journal Osteoporosis International, also revealed that high intake of potassium salts significantly reduces the excretion of calcium and acid in urine. “This means that excess acid is neutralized and bone mineral is preserved,” said lead author Dr Helen Lambert from the University of Surrey. “Excess acid in the body, produced as a result of a typical Western diet high in animal and cereal protein, causes bones to weaken and fracture. Our study shows that these salts could prevent osteoporosis, as our results showed a decrease in bone resorption.” Although bone resorption and bone formation is a natural process, allowing bones to grow, heal and adapt, in osteoporosis, the balance is shifted so that more bone is broken down than is built up, leading to fragility and fractures.
-With a thank you to Dan Meredith. (Ian: I have pondered the ‘why’ of men’s attitude to health for years as men accompany their wives like naughty puppies into our office. They stand apart, cross their arms, throw red herrings.. everything except admit they are actually scared s___less of losing health.)
You, and you alone – are the most important thing in your world.
Sound like an ass don’t I? But let me explain: Lets just say you’re single, no commitments, no debts – great right? So you’re telling me you don’t want to live very long? Or look like rubbish? Or maybe you feel like death from the moment you drag your exhausted carcass out of bed and mainline a triple espresso to get started? Perhaps you have a partner, family or someone you care for and support? If you’re not looking after yourself – how on earth do you expect to look after them?! That’s right – you can’t.
Which is why your health. Your fitness. Your wellbeing Your happiness Your time Have to be one of the FIRST things that you need to consider, end of.
Once you look after #1? You can look after #2, #3, #4 and so on. So it’s pretty simple. After you have woken up – you make YOU a priority first thing. Now is not the time to explain specifically what to do for the above in a few other posts, but for now – just start getting your head in the right frame of mind. YOU COME FIRST Short one today, but really is something we have to consider. I help support the care of my disabled sister – If I can I make money – no one else is going to pay for it. Which is why, after nearly making myself very ill through stress, poor lifestyle choices and lack of exercise I now make sure that I look after number one – so I can help everyone else. Also known as the ‘secure your own oxygen mask first’ philosophy’ I think I hammered that one home…. Ian: Thank you Dan!
At a beautiful 50, Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson is seriously into health.
We’ve watched with interest over the last year as Elle Macpherson launched into her Alkaline Lifestyle. First the Super Greens, and now she’s revealed that she loves pH testing.
We’ve reviewed Elle’s alkaline green powder supplement earlier. It’s good, but perhaps not so good that it is any way better than many other products, including OURS.
In a recent interview, Elle ‘The Body’ Macpherson has disclosed that she carries a pH kit with her wherever she goes, slipping surreptitiously away between shoots to have a quick twinkle and test. We’ve been supplying pH Test kits to clients for years, and wondered at the sudden increase in sales in the last week. So we did a little research and came up with Elle’s preference for an alkaline diet. “For Macpherson, the diet means having one espresso instead of three, eating only one animal protein meal (typically fish or chicken) a day, increasing her vegetable intake and still enjoying dark chocolate, coffee, goat’s cheese and Haloumi and every day two teaspoons of THE SUPER ELIXIR™ alkalising greens (Dr Simone’s special blend of balanced nutrients). ‘Nothing too extreme – it’s all about balance,’ she says.” Testing your pH levels is really simple and it can give a lot of information about the state of your health. It will tell you how acidic or alkaline your tissues and fluids are – and that affects all aspects of your well-being. How? In all kinds of ways.
The effects of an overly acidic diet and system
If you’re overly acidic, you may feel a lack of energy, find it difficult to lose weight, experience poor digestion, suffer from aches and pains or even fall victim to more serious disorders. In fact, since acid is naturally corrosive and inflammatory, it irritates the organs it comes in contact with.
How do I know if I’m acidic?
First of all you can look at your diet. If it’s filled with processed foods (anything in a foil packet!), carbohydrates, sugars, caffeine or alcohol, chances are you have higher acidic levels than you should. This can be causing some of the health issues above. By testing your urine with your own pH test kit, you can determine this yourself.
I know my diet is too acidic, what can I do?
If your diet is overly acidic or you’ve tested yourself using a pH test and have results which confirm this, the best thing you can do is introduce more alkaline foods and supplements into your diet. We’ve created a free New Alkaline Diet 7 Day Menu Plan and Recipes for people who want to experience the benefits of an alkaline diet. Adding a supplement such as the AlkaBooster, our formulation of a balanced mix of the four pillars of alkaline health, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, will also assist in alkalising the body.
If I want to look like Elle Macpherson, will the New Alkaline Diet help me?
Elle looks amazing for her age; you wouldn’t even know she’s 51. Switching to a more alkaline diet and increasing your water intake of hydrogen rich water, does have the added benefit of slowing or even reversing the ageing process. I know this because I’m 68 but feel as though I’m in my 50s! If you want to try our New Alkaline Diet click here, or to start living like Elle with your own pH test kit – click here. – Ian
Cassie the Dietician isn’t Cassie the researcher and originator of the New Alkaline Diet. THAT Cassie is my partner, but Cassie the Dietician is also a brilliant researcher on a parallel path to us here at AlkaWay. She’s very much into Paleo and Low Carb, so are we.
So I’m happy to add some links to some of her excellent posts in a series of blogs. Cassie has worked hard gathering facts about diet beliefs that frankly, are not true. And then busting them. The first one I want to cover is her ideas about breakfast. There is an idea floating around that our modern high speed lifestyle should just ‘drop’ breakfast and a cup of black ‘Joe’ is a good substitute.. or a doughnut at brunch.
As far as I’m concerned, I am NOT a Buddhist Monk whose first meal comes after a morning of meditation. I want my tummy to KNOW what’s going on. In that sense am an an equal opportunity employer. I employ my digestive system to digest the healthy food I supply it, and it knows what is going to happen at 7am, around midday and about 7 at night, and it has the freedom to adjust its schedule to suit!
Cassie the dietician says that breakfast is not optional in a health-centered lifestyle! She’s not heavy about what you eat for breakfast because she’s not precious! She says that if eggs aren’t really your thing, that’s okay! She uses the acronym PFC to work out if a specific meal or a food is P-Protein, F= Fats and C= Carbohydrate balanced.. and she’s been very busy creating PFC balanced breakfasts for us. take a look at her top fave breakfast suggestions here.
Amongst internet marketers, a powerful secret psychological weapon is a relatively unacknowledged knee jerk reaction most of us have to ‘missing out’. Smart marketers capitalise on this by offering limited time or limited numbers of whatever they are selling. I’m not here to judge the tactic: I can say it works because I’ve been caught many times myself. But.. I’m learning that if a marketer is going to do that he or she has to be darn careful not to be found out. I received the fourth in a series of sales emails from a guy who sells electronic water ionizers to a huge list of people who sign up to learn about the alkaline diet. The series of emails he sent me go like this: (The red is where I identify the scarcity principle at work)
Email 1.”Because time is tight, I’m gonna get right to it..
Over the last couple of days…
You’ve heard (and seen) me talk about the XXXXX Ionizer I use at home…
And people have been asking if there’s anyway to TRY one out themselves…
Well here’s the deal:
I literally just got off the phone with XXXXX…
I’ve been quietly hard at work for you over the last couple days…
And just got final confirmation of some really EXCITING NEWS:
I’ve been able to setup a special opportunity for 50 people…
To TRY the SAME XXXXX Ionizer I use at home – risk-FREE…
At a MASSIVE discount off the regular price…
Here’s the link:
That link will explain everything you need to know and how this deal works…
Now, before you click on that link…
I do need to tell you this:
You see, because XXXXX only agreed to make 50 units available for this special program…
If you’re interested (or even just curious)… I strongly recommend you go ahead and check this out now… Because based on the HUNDREDS of video comments… And DOZENS of private emails I’ve received from folks telling me how EAGER they are for this opportunity… I have no idea how quickly these units are going to get claimed…
So if you’re even REMOTELY interested…
Go ahead and check this out now, while you’ve got this email open and you’re thinking about it.
Here’s the link one last time:
Email 2: Important XXXX Instructions: The Calm before the storm)
OK, I’m opening the XXXXX offer tomorrow morning…
This is the first time I’ve had any discount on the XXXXX in over six months, and it’s unlikely to happen again this year.
PLUS it’s by far the biggest discount ever, anywhere, in the history of the XXXXX company…
In fact, this is only the second time I’ve done this in the past 24 months…
And as ever, XXXXX have strictly limited the number of units I can sell at a discount to just 50 (fifty!).
Remember, XXXXX is like Apple, you almost never see a newly-released, newly updated iPhone available at a discount… (Can you imagine getting the next iPhone 7 at a discount, the day before it’s released?)
And XXXXX are the same.
So they’ve limited my offer to just the first 50 people on a first-come-first-served basis…
Back in August when I last ran a promotion that was nowhere near as good as this…
It sold out in under 24 hours…
And this time it will probably be no different.
That being said, this should not be a panic situation for you.
If you want to make sure you get one then just jump on tomorrow as soon as you see my email, place your order and you will be fine…
I’m going to open the promotion TOMORROW (that’s Wednesday, February 11th) at 8am eastern U.S. time (that’s New York time) / 1pm GST (London time).
IMPORTANT: I will be sending you the link once we “go live”…
To find out what that means in your local time, you can use this time zone converter:

I’ll be sending you the link when we open up in just under 24 hours.
Until then, stay alkaline 🙂 XXXX
Email 3: Subject: Exciting News!
Is following the tried and true marketing system. It’s a copy of the first one.. just to make sure the 100,000 people+ on his list gets it.
Email 4: Heading: Bad news!
“I’ve got some GOOD news and some BAD news. The bad news is…
Remember that email I sent out yesterday?
The one giving 50 people the opportunity to “try before you buy” a brand-new XXXXX Ionizer in your home? Well the bad news is…
We completely sold out of those 50 units – in just under 24 hours.
(I could NOT believe how fast we sold out… WAY faster than I expected…)
In fact, if you tried ordering yesterday but you couldn’t get your order through in time…
There’s a good chance that it was because we had to shut down the shopping cart after we oversold.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is this:
I’ve managed to get another 30!
I’ve been on the phone with XXXXX, seeing if there’s something we can do…
XXXXX were so blown away by the demand and how passionate people were .
They’ve decided to make 30 more units available, on a first-come-first-serve basis…
But that’s it.
Just 30 more.
(You still get all of the bonuses too)
The only catch is…
Because these units still need to be prepped and go through their final stages of production…
It’s going to take an extra couple days for them to be shipped to you.
But that just means you’re getting a brand new, fresh unit.
Which at the end of the day…
With the special deal I’m offering?
Is really no big deal.
Here’s the link to grab one of the last few units before they sell out again:
p.s. You might be asking ‘why only this many units for sale?’
Well here’s the thing…
XXXXX are a lot like Apple when it comes to pricing.
You know how you basically NEVER see an Apple product for sale at anything below full price?
That’s how XXXXX like to do things too…
So it’s extremely rare that they would have a special deal and they’re only letting me do this privately, to my own subscribers…
You don’t see me plastering this price everywhere – you guys are the only ones who see it…
So that’s why there are only 80 in total at this price, worldwide…
They kinda want to keep it under-wraps and are doing it as a bit of a favor to me.
They definitely want numbers limited. So when these last 30 are gone, that’s definitely it.
And that will almost definitely be in the next day or so…
So here’s my suggestion: if you want one – grab it now: www.xxxxx”
So.. you may say, yes, I’ve seen campaigns like that before.. So what? Well, let’s look at this. He says he hasn’t run a campaign like this for six months.. but on November 16th 2014.. just 3 months ago, he sent this out:
“OK, so I have some important information about the XXXXX offer I’m opening tomorrow morning… And I urge you to act fast, because there are only 50 units available with the discount, and once they’ve gone, the price goes back up by $450 / £300 to full RRP again.
The discount will go live TOMORROW (Monday) at:
10am UK time (GMT, London time)
6am NYC time (EST)
I will be sending you the link to get the discount the second it goes live, and I recommend acting fast.
Remember — this is completely risk-free.
You are fully covered by my 60-Day 100% Guarantee Trial Period – which means you can try the XXXXX in your home for up to 60 days…
And if for any reason you want to send it back you can, and get 100% of your money back.
Again, this is completely risk free.
This is the first time I’ve had any discount on the XXXXX since February.
In fact, this is only the second time I’ve done this in the past 18 months…
And as ever, XXXXX have strictly limited the number of units I can sell at a discount to just 50 (fifty!).
Remember, XXXXX is like Apple, you almost never see a newly-released, newly updated iPhone available at a discount…
(Can you imagine getting an iPhone 6 at a discount, the day it’s released?!)
And XXXXX are the same.
So they’ve limited my offer to just the first 50 people on a first-come-first-served basis…
Back in February when I last ran a promotion that was nowhere near as good as this…

Anything seem familiar? Yep, the same campaign wording as the one I just received. 3 months. Not six months. Sent to the same list. But wait, there’s more! On September 10,2014 another one! At least this one is six months ago. And guess what? Same wording!
“Hey, heads up… I just wanted to let you know…Today is the LAST DAY to claim one of the XXXXX Ionizers at a MASSIVE discount, by clicking on the link below: www.XXXX Remember, after completely selling out of the 50 units XXXX made available for this special program… I was able to convince them to make another 30 units available at the same price. But that was IT. And right now? I don’t know if we’re going to sell out later today – or if we’ve already sold out by now… But this is the reason why – if you’re interested (or even just curious)…
I HIGHLY recommend clicking on the link below now to claim your unit before they completely disappear forever: www.XXXX Remember… Because you’ve got a full 60 days to try out the unit in your home BEFORE you need to decide if you want to keep it… By claiming one these units now, you’re not making any sort of commitment whatsoever. You’re just claiming one of these units so you can try it out for yourself. Then if you like it – and the results you get from it, simply do nothing – and it’ll be yours forever at a MASSIVE discount off the regular retail price. (And if for some reason you decide it’s not for you – simply send it back, and you won’t be charged a single penny.) And the best part? With this special program, shipping is FREE – and you also get over $300 worth of bonuses (including a FREE Alkaline Stick – which is the perfect companion to your Ionizer) But don’t delay. This opportunity disappears like a shadow in the night at the stroke of midnight tonight (Thursday) (sooner if all units sell out beforehand – which is looking like that will happen…) Here’s the link one last time: www.xxxx
Yes there’s more. But the question is.. is this real discount? The biggest vendor in the world of the same water ionizer sent an email to me last week. Its title?
“Did you see this amazing deal yet? Up to $900 in Freebies!”
My question of this strategy is: is it for real? If other dealers are offering mega discounts on this ionizer, is there even a special time limited offer at all, or is it simply an automated routine created to make sales using the scarcity principle? You be the judge! But.. beyond the offer and the selling technique.. are YOU are half full sort of a guy, or a half empty sort of a guy? Because the scarcity principle will nail the half empty guy every time!
Dr Ben Kim has done it again! Red beets are especially rich in folate, which is why they are useful for lowering blood homocysteine and reducing risk of birth defects. If you have a problem with constipation, red beets and their green tops are likely to provide significant relief. Both are rich in fiber that can help keep waste materials moving through your gastrointestinal tract at a healthy pace. Red beets are abundant in potassium and magnesium, while beet greens are an excellent source of beta-carotene, iron, and calcium. All of these nutrients are essential to maintaining the health of your digestive tract lining and the smooth muscle fibers that create the waves of contractions within your colon to produce bowel movements. It’s official – artificial sweeteners cause metabolic disturbance!
A new study in Nature finds that artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose and aspartame can actually raise blood sugar levels instead of reducing them, inducing glucose intolerance. This completely opposes the regularly reinforced opinion that artificial sweeteners pose no risk to consumers. The study demonstrates that the consumption of commonly used artificial sweeteners drives glucose intolerance through creating alterations in the gut microbiota. These changed microbial metabolic pathways in turn create susceptibility to metabolic disease e.g. obesity, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes etc. Whilst the study was carried out on mice, the researchers show similar artificial sweetener-induced dysbiosis and glucose intolerance in healthy subjects. Although the direct mechanism for creating the dysbiosis is still unknown, the paper calls for an urgent reassessment of the massive and widespread usage of artificial sweeteners.
Erica is our inhouse naturopath here at AlkaWay. She keeps us all healthy and educated. Here’s her ‘take’ on spring detox. Worth a read!
Spring, an ideal time to detox
By: Erica Whisson (B Nat, B Com) During winter we naturally tend to eat heavier and more warming foods. They are the foods we need to stay healthy, especially those in colder climes. We have evolved to do this. During our evolution (especially the ice age) and other times of food scarcity such strategies increased our chances of survival through a long cold winter. However, when it gets to spring our need for warming foods decreases. By the end of September many of us are feeling a little sluggish, and not at all like the vibrantly alive active person we want to be come summer.
This makes early spring an ideal time to detox and kick start the body’s metabolism.
Any healthy detox programme looks at making long term lifestyle changes, and not just a couple of weeks of “being good”; however often those couple of weeks of being good are a great motivator to a healthier lifestyle. Diet In terms of a detox diet, it can be as simple as: If it comes in a packet or a tin, you don’t eat it. The layout of most supermarkets makes this easy. If it’s around the edges then it is probably OK, if it is in the aisles, it probably isn’t. This means you eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables (seasonal of course), nuts and seeds as you want. One mistake many people make when detoxifying, is to not eat sufficient protein. Protein is essential for (among other things) the liver to function, for the body to heal, for immune system and brain function. The ideal amount of protein per day is not something that can easily be ascertained and there is no magic amount. For many people about 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight is sufficient. However if you get a lot of exercise – especially strength training – then requirements are higher. If you are carrying extra weight, then basing protein amount on lean muscle mass or ideal weight is often a better indication. The choice of protein is also something that gives rise to contention. For every positive of a protein source there are negatives, so it is important to find the ideal protein for the individual. Most non animal sources of protein are deficient in at least one essential amino acid, so protein combining is essential. Legumes are a great source of protein, but for those with a history of, or predisposition to thyroid issues, they can exacerbate any problems. Soy is one of the most genetically modified and highly sprayed crops cultivated, so foods like tofu, unless organic, are often not a good choice for a detox protein. You’re trying to lose toxins, not add them! Red meat is high in saturated fats, and though saturated fats (in moderation) are not as unhealthy as we have been led to believe, red meat, even if organic is usually not the ideal protein when detoxifying. It just makes the digestive system have to work harder. Seafood would be ideal in terms of amino acid balance and nutrients, as well as being easy on the digestive system, if our waters weren’t so polluted, so only eating smaller fish, the ones at the bottom of the food chain that haven’t accumulated as many toxins is a better choice. Protein Supplements For most people a protein supplement is not required and you should be able to get sufficient protein from the diet. However, if you are exercising and losing muscle, or recovering from exercise more slowly than normal then supplementation can be indicated. Another group that may benefit from protein supplementation are those who are eating more than they should, or constantly feel hungry. Protein is more filling and leaves you satiated for longer than carbohydrates. So a protein shake between meals is ideal. For these people rice and pea proteins are usually a better option than whey protein. This is because whey protein has been found to increase the hormone Insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF1) which has been found to impede weight loss in people who are not getting sufficient exercise. (Milk – The promoter of chronic Western diseases Bodo C. Melnik *Medical Hypotheses Volume 72, Issue 6, June 2009, Pages 631–639) Water As simple as it sounds, one of the most important parts of a detox is to drink sufficient good quality purified water. There is no point in trying to remove toxins from the body if, with every mouthful of water, you are retoxifying. Adequately purified water that also has an increased amount of molecular hydrogen can certainly aid in a detox regime. Reducing the amount of chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, heavy metals and organic pesticides from water before drinking it is an obvious choice. Hydrogen Rich Water Increasing the intake of Molecular Hydrogen is not so straight forward. Hydrogen is, after all, the most abundant molecule in the universe. Molecular Hydrogen, consumed through drinking hydrogen rich water has been found to be an antioxidant, specific for the hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite – 2 very active, though thankfully short lived free radicals that the body has no other defence against. Excess levels of these free radicals can damage virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids and amino acids; are implicated in neurological autoimmune diseases and cannot be eliminated by an enzymatic reaction but require antioxidants. Drinking Hydrogen rich Water can help to minimise the effects of these free radicals. Molecular Hydrogen also increases the levels of some of the most important antioxidant enzymes the body produces, such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. These enzymes help keep the levels of free radicals in check and help prevent oxidative stress and the health conditions associated with it, such as heart disease, organ damage, age related memory decline, cancers and chronic fatigue. In addition these enzymes are an integral part of the body’s natural detoxification processes. They are essential to modify toxins into a form the body can easily eliminate.
As part of a detox regime increasing molecular hydrogen, and through this increasing the body’s natural antioxidant defences, allows more of the bodies resources to be used for healing, and eliminating toxins.
More on Detox Supplements As part of a spring detox a supplement to help improve digestive function, support the liver and assist the body in eliminating toxins from the digestive tract through increasing peristaltic action and eliminating parasites can be invaluable in increasing vitality and overcoming that sluggish feeling. Ingredients to look for include the herbs wormwood, black walnut, pumpkin seed, milk thistle, olive leaf, pau d’arco, gentian, barberry, garlic, thyme and cloves. (Such supplements should be used short term only). Garlic, thyme and cloves are all anti-microbial, thus can be beneficial in eliminating harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Wormwood, black walnut, pau d’arco are used as anti-parasitic herbs which also increase the action of the large intestine and have a laxative effect. A laxative can be an important part of any detox as sluggish bowel motions gives more time for faeces to ferment in the bowel which increases the toxic load on the body. Some fermentation is essential for good bacteria, but too much can be detrimental. St Mary’s thistle, pumpkin seed, garlic and barberry may help to improve liver function and improve the levels of liver enzymes thus improving the ability of the liver to eliminate functions. St Mary Thistle, also known as Milk Thistle, is a well researched herb for improving overall liver health, and potentially helping restore liver cell function after damage. Gentian is used to stimulate digestion, specifically the release of gastric acid and digestive enzymes. This increase in function can help to increase nutrient absorption, and overall action of the digestive tract. So… to kick start your vitality a spring detox is strongly recommended. For most people eating only fresh foods and drinking only water and herbal teas, and taking a short course of a supplement that can stimulate the body’s natural detoxification systems is sufficient. To optimise efforts, the water should be hydrogen rich and purified, the foods should be seasonal, local and organic, the supplement should support all the systems of elimination. If done properly a detox should not have side effects. If you do have the frequent side effects of headache, nausea and fatigue then you are probably detoxing too quickly and intensely. In this instance slow down everything you are doing, simply starting with drinking the best water is usually the best approach. Of course, anyone with an existing health condition should consult a health professional before beginning any detox regime. Answers to a couple of frequently asked detox questions Is a detox is a waste of time and money if the body does this anyway? Some people will attest that the body will naturally eliminate toxins and that a liver function test will identify any need to do anything to improve liver function. However, very rarely does the liver suddenly become damaged. Like every health condition, it takes time to develop. Thus it is often beneficial to give the liver some support a few times a year, depending on your lifestyle, to prevent major health conditions. Should children detox? In an ideal world, no. Children have not had the years of accumulating toxins and thus detoxing is not required. However, many of us live in a polluted world and our foods have higher levels of toxins than the body can cope with. For children with a less than ideal diet, and living in polluted areas a gentle detox may be indicated. For most children, eliminating all fluids other than water and mild herbal teas such as chamomile, and increasing fruit and vegetables (ideally organic) and ensuring sufficient good quality protein is sufficient. For children with conditions which may be associated with toxicity (such as some skin conditions, allergies, or fatigue) then a more complete approach may be required and a visit to a naturopath is strongly recommended. What are good herbal teas to assist in a detox? Good quality chamomile is a gentle and effective detox herb. Loose leaf chamomile, with the petals still attached will generally work better than teabags as the herb in the teabags has been processed a lot more and some of the therapeutic value is diminished. Another good herb is dandelion root (the leaf is a diuretic) which can stimulate the liver. For a combination of herbs try yellow dock, burdock, nettle and maybe a little ginger.
Garlic has antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial properties. J Tradit Complement Med. 2012 Jul-Sep; 2(3): 192–201. It does this by increasing the rate and strength of the contractions of the intestines causing parasites to dislodge from intestinal walls. This also has the effect of increasing removal of wastes from the intestine. Black walnut is used to eliminate parasites, including worms and also as a laxative. (http://www.ndhealthfacts.org/wiki/Juglans_nigra) Pumpkin seeds have been found to have antioxidant actions, and also to improve liver enzyme function thus improving the ability of the liver to eliminate toxins. Just to stay alive, our body must carry out millions of chemical processes, which are collectively known as your metabolism, also at the most basic level, cell signalling. Apert from everything else, your metabolism can even play a role in weight gain. It determines the amount of energy your body needs, so if you take in more energy than you need, and the excess will be stored as lipids. That’s a nice word for FAT. We are quick to target ‘slow metabolism’ for weight gain, when in fact we need smarter food and exercise choices, plus, of course, the right supplements. The most significant element of your metabolism.. – churning through 50 to 80 per cent of the energy burnt each day – is your basal metabolic rate (BMR). This is the energy your body burns – just to maintain functioning at rest. What else burns energy? Well… how much physical activity you do, and also the ‘thermic effect’ of the food you eat – energy you use to digest and absorb your food. According to Tim Crowe, associate professor in nutrition at Deakin University, there are many pills, supplements and foods that claim to boost metabolism and burn fat, but most of their claims are unproven. “Even if they did work, they might come with unintended side effects, such as increasing your heart rate.” he says. But obviously if we are going to make a good educated decision, it can be helpful to know what factors do affect our metabolism. Some of them are within our control. Even being aware of factors you can’t control may still be useful. It can motivate you to compensate for the issue
10 important ways you can manage your metabolism:
1. Muscle mass –AKA the amount of muscle tissue we have. Muscle burns more energy than fat. The more muscle you pack, the more energy you need just to exist. Most exercise will help boost muscle, but resistance or strength training is most effective: lifting weights, and exercises that work against the resistance of your body weight such as pushups, squats and lunges. 2. Age – As you get older, your metabolic rate generally slows. Partially due to loss of muscle tissue, but also through hormonal and neurological changes. As kids go through periods of growth, their metabolism speeds up. 3. Body Size Bigger bodies usually = larger BMR simply because they have larger internal organs and fluid volume to maintain. Taller people have a larger skin surface, which means their bodies may have to work harder to maintain a constant temperature. 4. Gender As men are usually larger than women, they generally have faster metabolisms. 5. Genetics Also play a role in the speed of our metabolism. Some genetic disorders may also affect your metabolism. 6. Physical activity Regular exercise will increase muscle mass and support your body to burn kayjays at a faster rate, even lying on the couch!. 7. Hormonal factors Hormonal imbalances, including hypo- and hyperthyroidism, can affect your metabolism. 8. Environmental factors Weather affects our metabolism. A hot day or a cold day will cause your body to work harder to maintain normal temperature, so this increases our metabolic rate. 9. Drugs Caffeine and nicotine can increase your metabolic rate. Medications including some antidepressants and anabolic steroids may fatten you up regardless of what you eat. 10. Diet Some aspects of your diet also affect metabolism. Insufficient iodine for optimal thyroid function will slow down your metabolism. So.. how many of these nuggets can you actually implement in some way? In my case, I’m not over muscular (that’s an understatement!) so I’m not feeding huge abs, I am 67 so that’s something I can’t do much about, I’m not fat so I’m not burning Kayjays just standing still, I’m male, so I might be burning a bit faster than women, (again, can’t change that, can I?). I have no genetic disorders that I know of, I do have a good walk every day and try to rip off some pushups daily, I don’t have hyperthyroidism, I can’t do anything about the weather, I’m not about to give up coffee, and I know I get enough Iodine. So.. was it of use to me? No. Can I support it in other ways without resorting to those nasty side effect supplements and drugs the experts referred to? well, perhaps I can. It appears from new studies on the effects of molecular hydrogen, which is neither a drug nor a supplement, is (to date) completely side effect free, that a major role of ingested H2 is the support of every single one of those trillions of daily cell signals. In short, it appears that this simple inert gas may be a general allround metabolic support. No, please note, Mister TGA, I did NOT say it is. I don’t know. All I suggest is do your own research at the Molecular Hydrogen Institute. If you want to see how it works for you, you can get H2 though the UltraStream water system, or from the magnesium based HydroFX. In both cases magnesium breaks down to hydrogen, which, if ingested quickly – before it wafts away like a hydrogen balloon, may have the effects you’ll read about.
